I have always been in love with the extra soft and smooth feel of the tights from the Pure range. Thus when I saw the release of the Pure Shimmer 40 Concealer Tights a couple months ago, I said to myself: “I have to add these in my closet…”
Strengths & Weaknesses
⊕ Bonded seam that is virtually invisible under tight-fitting clothing.
⊕ Near opaque appearance with a slight sheen.
⊕ Absolutely soft and smooth, super comfortable to wear.
⊗ Stitches around the gusset do rub the skin.
Packaging & product description
The most obvious change is the presentation on the cover. The image of a model wearing the style used to dominate the front cover. This is now replaced by a dominance of white colour, and the image only makes up a fraction on the front cover. The same phenomenon also applies to the rear side. The description of the style is now printed in light grey and is in English language only. The size of the size chart is also reduced. One addition to the presentation is prints of hand writing and drawings. These seemed to be unique to every style.
Apart from the noticeable change in presentation, the packaging remains the same.
The product description online and on the rear cover are identical, which reads:
“Invisible and exceedingly soft tights with a light sheen
Delicate makeup for your legs
An innovative yarn mix for an extra-soft feel when worn, and flawless, completely natural-looking legs. The bonded seams and the wide comfortable waistband ensure an invisible finish, even under tight clothing.“
- Concealing effect
- Bonded seams for an undetectable finish under tight clothing
- Comfortable waistband with logo
Appearance & texture
The Pure Shimmer 40 Concealer are semi-opaque tights (40 denier appearance) in slight sheen fashion. The total length of the tights measures 86cm long when laid on a flat surface. Its texture is exceptionally soft and smooth to the touch. The knitted waistband measures 6cm wide. The seam on the panty are bonded (i.e., glued), making it invisible even under tight-fitting clothing. The distance between the tip of the waistband and the crotch is approximately 23cm. There is a gusset, and the toes are reinforced.
The composition is 88% nylon and 12% elastane.
The size online suggests a range from XS to XL. The size chart on the rear cover however, goes up to XXL. I have included the chart below. Size S is used in this review.
At the time of writing this review, there are 6 colours available on Wolford Online Shop. They are: Caramel, Cosmetic, Gobi, Fairly Light, Admiral and Black. I also found Caramel and Saba colour in Wolford Melbourne website. I bought Black for this review.
I like the concept and design of the new presentation, especially the drawing and handwriting. They give a sense of the product being closely connected to our life and surroundings. However, I find the font size for product description and the size chart rather small. I am entering the age where I need to move the object very close to or further away from the eye for a clear focus. So I can imagine how troublesome this can be for more mature assistants and customers.
The new presentation was first seen in AW19-20 Collection, which was some time end of last year. To the best of my knowledge, the last change of presentation took place between February 15 and June 15, which is roughly 3.5 years ago.
The fit was perfectly fine and true to the size recommendation. There was also a good envelopment from toe to panty. The fit of the toe section was nearly to its extreme on me. The knitted waistband fitted well. It didn’t roll down or dig in; I had no issues with it.
The appearance of the tights was what I categorised as “nearly opaque”. They are thicker than semi-sheer tights from both visual and sensual perspective. Yet they won’t cover dark skin patches, such as birthmarks, moles or tattoos.
I found the shimmer to be slight sheen. For comparison, the style is not as shiny as Satin Touch 20 tights, and certainly far less glossy than Neon 40 tights. It had a reflective sheen under ambient lighting, and slight sheen under sunlight. You can see the difference from the image below. Also worth noting is that the style is the first pair in the range to have a slight sheen look. While having the same knitting construction and feel, the Pure 10 and Pure 50 are generally matt.
The bonded seam is in my opinion the best innovation by Wolford! It is virtually flat, and thus is invisible even under tight-fitting clothing. The images below clearly demonstrate this. I deliberately not flatten the wrinkles on the seam at the waistband so you know where it is. Also, the seam, though glued, does last. In fact, none of my tights from the Pure range worn because of the seam broke. They were all retired because of snags and ladder.
The tights felt absolutely soft and smooth!! This is one of the main features of Wolford’s Pure range and I think the brand has maintained it very well. One small drawback though… The stitches that secure the gusset were quite rough on the pair I bought. They rubbed the skin when I was not wearing any underwear.
My legs did get warm after wearing it for a while. Yet the real test will come a few months later, when the weather starts to cool down. I will update my findings till then.
With the extra soft and smooth texture, it was an absolute pleasure wearing them. The bonded seam was a plus when paired with close-fitting clothing. If you prefer a bit of shininess, I definitely recommend Pure Shimmer 40 Concealer tights.
The style is currently available for €39, £39 or USD$67. The range also includes 10 denier (Pure 10), 50 denier (Pure 50) and one with leg support (Pure 30 Complete Support). You can find all these reviews from my Reviews page here.
